As a youth, Bordalo II observed his grandfather, Artur Real Bordalo (1925–2017), who was a painter. At the age of 11, he began experimenting with graffiti art using spray paint on walls. Instead, he explored ceramics, sculpture, and other materials1.
Bordalo II’s art practice involves using discarded materials such as old tires, wrecked car parts, plastic waste, and aluminum cans. By transforming these materials into sculptures, he critiques materialism and consumerism in the modern world
His youth took place between the hours spent in the studio of his grandfather Real Bordalo, who had an incessant passion for watercolors and oils and portrayed landscapes and typical scenes of the city, and the adventures around illegal graffiti in the underworld of the city of Lisbon.
